Gambling and casino games

History of gambling
Cash or value games has over 4000 years. In China and Egypt people played for slaves or other valuable things. We can find proofs of hazard exists on pyramids walls or even in a Bible (soldiers were playing for Jesus clothes). Card games: Blackjack and Poker was created in China. The queen of hazard - roulette - was invented in XVII century by Blaise Pascal, and was used by prince Monako Karol in XVIII to repaire princes budget.

Gambling today
The country where gambling is the most popular is America. Las Vegas has the largest concentration of casinos in the United States. Historical capital of hazard is Monte Carlo. Countries where gambling is legal are using profits from casinos for feed the budget. In the USA in 2004 the profit from casinos is 47,3 billion dollars. The PricewaterhouseCoopers, the financial advise company, is analizing that in 2009 this profit will be over 64 billion dollars.

Casino games
There are three general categories of casino games:
  1. Table games, such as blackjack, craps, roulette and baccarat. They are played on a table and operated by one or more dealers like a croupier or poker dealer.
  2. Electronic gaming machines (for example slot machines) are played by one player and are determined only by luck.
  3. Random number games are based on selection of random numbers from gaming equipment or random number generator. They may be player at a table, like Roulette, or through the purchase of tickets like Bingo or Lotto.
We could also add a fourth category of gambling: a sporting bet, where people bet for the results of sports events.

The most popular casino games:

Poker

Card game, played with 52 card pack. Players can win with best hand or bluf (so in this game not only luck but also the skills can give you an adventage). There are many types of this game. For example 5-draw is a variant where players have 5 cards and after betting they can change from 0 to 5 cards to get a better hand. Second popular game is texas hold'em. In this variant every player has 2 hidden cards, and there is 5 common cards. Players must create the best 5 card hand from 7 card on the table.

Possible hands:

BlackJack

BlackJack is a game where players play against dealer. At the beginning of each round, the player places a bet and receives two cards. The object of the game is to get a higher card count than the dealer, but without going over 21. Cards with a number 2 to 10 have their printed value. Cards J to K have 10 points, and Ace has 1 or 11. Player can take one of four decisions:
  • hit - take another card
  • stand - take no more cards
  • double stake - bet a double stake and take only one card more
  • split - when two first cards have 10 points, player can split them and bet the same amount of money for second
Next presentation will be about addiction of hazard and hazard legality.

And here are some questions for you:

1. What do you think about casino's? Do you go there sometimes, or you plan to go?
2. Do you play at online casino? If yes, which one?
3. Do you think that playing in casino should be legal or not? Why?

  1. When I was under 21 I wanted to go to the casiono, but I still haven't done it (though I'm over 21 now). I also do not play in online casinos. But I was addicted to "dice poker" in "Witcher" game and to Black Jack in online game "The crims" :P
I don't see any reasons why playing in casinos shouldn't be legal. People play under their responsibility. The age restriction is, in my opinion, a sufficient way to protect people from their stupidity.

  3. I have never been in a casino and I am not going to do that. I don't care whether casinos exist or not. If there are people who like going there that's ok but casinos are definately not for me. I can play cards at home but not for money and not in a casino. Legal or illegal? As I wrote before, if somebody enjoys that then why not? The propblem is that there very often go people who do not have their own money but borrowed and there is a problem... For me casinos are good places for mafia and gangsters who can "earn" money in let's say better way.

  4. I went there few times - nothing special. First, I was convincing that everyone there, wear formal suits, everything is terribly expensive and we are strongly unprepared to go there. But that’s not true. Everyone can get into and it doesn’t matter what you will wear. You can go even in swimming pants. Important, you have to have you ID card to proof that you are over 18. Actually they have a good coffee – and quite cheap as well (just about 4 PLN per cup in Hilton). After that you can tell your friends
    - “Hey, I was in Hilton with my lady and we even drank a cup of coffee.”
    - “Uuu, respect – U rich buster”
My friend is strongly addicted casino player. He can spend all day (24H) and salary on roulette. I fill sorry for him and his family – but it is not a part of my business. We’ve tried to explain him few times what he is doing wrong with his life, but without any positive result.
Kasiu - there are no such restrictions to protect people from their stupidity :)

  5. I was in casino when I was in Atlantic City. I was playing on 25cent machines. The balance for me was aligned. I lost the same cash as I won. I do not like this kind of entertainment. When I am listening stories about people, who lost everything in casinos I am thinking of closing this places.

  6. "When I am listening stories about people, who lost everything in casinos I am thinking of closing this places." but you know... I am listening about car drivers, who had accident after drinking. So... alcohol should be forbidden like drugs. But we can't forget about people who drink responsibly only for have fun, why they must suffer? The same with casinos, people go there for fun, it shouldn't be forbidden or closed because some of them are loosing everything that they have ;)

  9. Casinos are cool. I've never been there but i experienced online casino i4poker.com where i lost 10 euro but in the end i'm not going to cry because of that :). I don't think that running a casino is something unlegal that should be forbidden. If someone have a right mind he'll not experience any disadvantage from this kind of activity on the contrary - fun!

I recommend i4poker.com - their app is 10x better than recently well advertised pokerstars.pl

  10. I play in casinos very often (mainly roulette). But it's very, very stupid habit :) In my opinion gambling should be legal. If it's not it will take place in underground (as alcohol prohibition in usa in the past).

  12. I've never been to a casino, but I play poker a lot. Mostly with my friends and sometimes on-line tournaments with small buy-ins. Poker is fun and intelligent - especially texas hold'em - because you don't depend mainly on luck like in other gambling games, but on analysis, a bit of math and observation

  13. I never been in Casino.
I think everything is for people but reasonable people, who knows when stops play.
Closing Casinos hasn't sense because if someone wants play for money, he'll find opportunity to play.

  15. I think casinos are a good place to relax, if you know your limits and know when to quit. I would like to go to a real casino one day and play one of the serious card games. If I decide to play in an online casino – it would only be roulette – but just for fun. I think casinos should be legal just as alcohol is. The problem of addiction is an individual problem and it cannot force people to shut down casinos. If someone cannot cope with his or her gambling problem – they should stop going to such places.
