Snowboarding – part 1.

A snowboard is the most important element of snowboarding equipment. It is a board designed in such a way so that it can be strapped to the feet and it is used for sliding down the snow-capped slopes.

This is my board :)

Most snowboards are made from wood laminated with fiberglass. The front part of the board is slightly turned upwards (a so-called nose), so that it would not bury in the soft snow.

The back of the board, depending on the structure and purpose of the board, is sometimes also turned up, but a lot of boards have it flat. Boards with the upturned backs are used by people who, doing tricks on the slope, sometimes slide backwards.

This is me on my board :)

The ”runner” of the board (the area which is in contact with the snow) is covered with a light porous plastic, polyethylene p-tex, which allows the absorption of lubricants that reduce friction between the board and the snow. The side edges of the board are usually equipped with thin metal surfaces which facilitate the performance of evolutions and turns. A typical angle between the edge of the board, and the runner is 90 °, but for the aggressive, fast riding more acute angles are used. For jibbing, or riding on rails, the edges are blunted.

The upper surface of the board is usually covered with patterns and drawings, whose projects are part of the marketing process of the snowboarding industry. Many of the zealous snowboarders smarten up their boards on their own, which is one of the ways they manifest the belonging to the snowboarding subculture.

What do you think about snowboarding?
Or maybe you ski? Tell me something about your preferences…

In the next part of my presentation I am going to write about snoboarding styles.. :)

  1. As some of you probably know I come from Zakopane and I do like skiing very much:) However, I have never tried snowboarding. Frankly speaking, I do not have a very good opinion of fans of that sport 'cause they destroy the piste. But maybe the ones that practice snowboarding in the Tatra mountains in fact do not know how to do it:(

  6. I never tried to snowboarding, but I think, that this is a great discipline. Once, I went on skateboard, but that was long time ago and not true :P
But returning to the topic. I really envy you. I hope that sometime I will learn this, because now I haven't got enough time (at least I think so ;)).

  7. Snowboarding and Skiing are both exciting and popular winter activities. Each offers a different kind of snow experience, so whether you ride or ski down the slopes, Snowboarding and Skiing can provide the adrenaline rush and the adventure that you will surely look forward to every winter sport season. Personally, I prefer Skiing to Snowboarding mostly because I have started skiing a long time ago and I'm a fan of this sport up to this day. I have tried Snowboarding and I have to admit that it was quite a challenge to make that switch.

  8. I really hate when it's cold outside that's why whenever it is possible I'm going abroad to countries where it's warm. I've heard about sandboarding (basically it's the same but on sand). Maybe this would suit me :)

  9. I love snowboarding! My father is a big fan of winter sports and we went skiing together ever since I remeber. Unfortunately I wasn't able to do it for a while know, mostly due the lack of time. But I always promise myself I'll get back to it someday.

  10. Hahah, Adam suggested a good alternative for those who really can't stand cold but still enjoy such sports. I'm just wondering how to compare costs of traditional winter holidays spent in mountains enjoying snowboarding to those in warm countries with a sandboard. Naturally, it seems that winter holidays in the season might be much more expensive but still you have to go really far to have a nice, warm weather. Thus, we would probably pay far more for the flight to such a place. On the other hand, the accommodation should be much cheaper in hot countries during this season. Maybe one day I'll decide on such holidays as I prefer summer more than winter (except Christmas time and New Year's Eve ;)).

  11. I ski since I was 8 years old, it was in Czech Republic. Up to last year there was only ski, but that winter I decided to try snowboarding. At the beginning it was terrible(fall over, fall over, many bruises), only one thing took me away from throwing away my snowboard, I had only my board, and far away from home. Fortunately on the 3th day I have made big progress, end the rest of time I could enjoy snowboarding, but a lot of training before me :(
Now I`m not sure, if I want to ski or snowboarding next winter, it is difficult decision

  12. I ski since early childhood and I first tried snowboarding when I was 15. I like both skis and snowboard, but I favour snowboard- don't ask me why, just because.

According to what Adam said, sandboarding seems to be something for me too. Not because I hate cold, but because I like snowboarding so much, that I will be very happy if I could do it also in summer :)

Unfortunately this winter I'm not going to go on winter vacation anywhere :(

  13. I started skiing in the 93/95 season, so it was some time ago. :} About five years ago i tried to learn snowboarding. It was not as easy as I thought :)
But after two days I managed to run down from one to another hillside :^) In the next season I'm going to get some snowboard lessons.

  14. In my opinion snowboarding is quite dangerous. The euqipment looks expensive and it often needs to be replaced because of inevitable destruction. Especially while taking the first steps in this sport. What is more if you are not vere careful you can get seriously hurt or permanently paralyzed. OMG! THE WINTER IS COLD!!

  15. I have never snowboarded but once I have skied in the Tatra Mountains so my experience with winter sports is not big. I really don’t mind people who snowboard but they are generally perceived as those who destroy the piste and make others skiing dangerous owing to the fact that they tend to behave very carelessly when going down the ski run.

  18. I have never tried snowboarding, but I love skiing. I have been last year in Szczyrk after a couple years of break and even though it was pretty crowded I had a very good time. Hope to go somewhere this winter - preferably in the Alps.

I've never tried any of them but if I have to decide, I'll choice snowboarding. Maybe because it seems to me it's more dynamic sport than skiing. But I'm not expert so I can wrong...

  20. I didn't yet tried snowboarding but i really want to. There's a market of used stuff in Warsaw somewhere @ Mokotów. I'm planning to buy there my first snowboard. I heard that is better not to buy new stuff because boards are easy to scratch and i don't want to see scratched my 1000zl :).
